Beijing 1-Hutong

Arrival in Beijing airport
We flew over the Arctic Circle. I heard (while half asleep) someone say that we were over Siberia. When it got light outside, I could see the desolate landscape of Outer Mongolia.

"Hutong" means "passageway" in Mongolian. The streets were very narrow.

Hutongs are being torn down to make room for 500 new hotels in preparation for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Lunch in one woman's home in the hutong. She was up since 5:00 AM cooking. She taught us how to make Chinese dumplings! It was our best meal in China.

Bell Tower. Most cities have a bell tower and a drum tower. They only ring the bell on Chinese New Year now since it is so deafening. It can be heard miles away.
