Bob at the Great Wall |
In 1980 Dad brought a Mackinac Associates banner to the Great Wall for a photograph so we did, too. |
Our local newspaper prints photos of residents reading the paper at exotic locations, but the girls decided not to submit it. |
A few years ago a large number of Chinese got married at the Great Wall at the same time. They engraved locks and threw the keys into the gorge. |
The steps are very worn and uneven in height...it's a demanding hike up the wall. |
The wall extends 4000 miles and was begun in the 7th century. It ultimately did not keep out the invaders to the north. |

Sentinels in each tower would burn wolf dung to send smoke signals to Beijing in remarkable speed. Supposedly, the wolf dung made a dark smoke that would rise straight up. |
Kaia and Brita initially thought they would run to the first tower, but quickly got worn out!
A family asked to have their photo taken with Kaia. They were from Hong Kong and very excited about their first trip to the wall. |
The boys were carrying a flute and I explained to the dad that Kaia also plays the flute. We gave the boys some souvenir Mackinac pens we brought along to share and to explain where we live. |

These girls asked for Brita's email address. |
