We visited a Jewish woman's home...her daughter creates and sells Chinese papercuts. |
She and her daughter live in one room...one bed, dining table, and TV. |
Social life in the hutong |
Delivering coal door to door |
These boys passed by with a soccer ball so Brita jumped in! |
|
As if coal dust isn't bad enough...he also smokes! |
We were sitting on the bus and this little girl started waving to Brita and hopping up and down. Brita jumped off the bus and gave her one of our souvenir Mackinac pens. She was so happy! (Brita, too!) |
Harry Potter in Kaifeng |
Another elevator adventure. A bunch of our tour members got on an elevator and Bob was the last to get on, setting off the weight alarm. Since he weighs about 150, we got a lot of laughs out of that!
Many high rises in China do not have a 4th floor. "4" sounds the same as the word for "death" so is considered unlucky. |
Kaifeng at night |
We took a walk to the Kaifeng night market near our hotel. |
KFC |
You could find about anything imaginable to eat in the night market. |

The conditions were very filthy. Lots of trash everywhere, but definitely an exciting place to be! |
|
These popped kernels of rice were kind of like cheetos without the cheese and pretty tasty. |
You could also buy anything in the night market. We bought chopsticks and pajamas. |
|
These two young students started talking to Peter. They were thrilled that he could speak some Mandarin. Within 30 seconds there was a huge crowd forming around us. So much fun! |
